Governor’s School Applications
This year’s NC Governor’s School Applications have opened up to a select few Sophomores and Juniors. The application process for these students is incredibly competitive, and if selected, the student(s) will spend four weeks on campus at one of two NC College Campuses.
These students will pick an area to study when they apply to GS, and will spend all four weeks studying that specific discipline with scholars and professors. Some disciplines include (but are not limited to): Arithmetics, English, Earth/Physical Science, Social Sciences, Art, Dance, Choral Music, and Band/Instrumental Music.
The students will study as a resident at said college campus, living a college-esque lifestyle (not to worry, they are not allowed to leave the campus unsupervised). These students will be exposed to a dorm/college student routine to prepare them for the future, wherever it may take them. We encourage our students to study a discipline that has an effect on their future career plans.
Many students have been sent from GCHS to Governor’s School in the past, and we remind the students selected for eligibility to apply that it is a very big accomplishment to be eligible to apply.
We wish our GCHS student applicants the very best of luck through their applications. Go Barons!

Military Ball 2024
On Saturday (11/16/24), our GCHS NNDCC sponsored their fourth Military Ball. The evening started with formalities, such as speeches, toasts, presentation of the colors, and ended with lots of dancing and laughing.
The guest speaker for the event was Mayor Winslow, and he spoke on how the cadets are learning basic leadership and morals to carry on in life whether or not we plan on pursuing a career in the military.
The CO (Haley Derby) gave a speech and invited her mother, Kay Derby and Courtney Hart (NNDCC Booster Club members) to come give a speech and gift to Chief Howard, expressing our gratitude toward him.
The rest of the night held dancing, singing, laughing, and memory-making (if that’s even a real verb). The theme was Enchanted Forest, and the decorations put up by our Booster Club members and cadets, as well as Chief Howard were simply amazing!
Thank you to Chief Howard and the Booster Club members/cadets who helped put together this amazing night! Go Barons.
