Fort Bragg Field Trip

On November 4, the cadets of Gates County High School’s NNDCC woke up early to leave the school at 7 a.m. to start their second annual trip to Fort Bragg (Liberty).

The cadets experienced what it would feel like being in a helicopter with the help of the helicopter simulator. They had the chance to test their shooting skills with the Shooting Range Simulator.

They learned so much more about the attacks on our country and many others in the Airborne & Special Operations Museum Foundation.

The cadets had fun bowling with Chief and the chaperons who accompanied them.

They met Fred the medical dummy who would spray blood to help new soldiers in the field learn how to help their brothers and sisters in a bad situation.

The cadets finished their night playing board games and talking with friends in the Officers hotel.

Brandon Griffin says, “I had a lot of fun. I wish we could have ziplined like the cadets last year did, but I would definitely go again.”

All in all everyone had a great time and can’t wait for the next field trip!

Welcome Mrs. Boyce

When you think of an ISS (in school suspension) Coordinator, you are likely to think of a mean person. But at Gates County High School, Debbie Boyce defies that stereotype. She is not just an administrator; she’s a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of hope for students who find themselves in need of guidance.

She’s at the school bright and early ready to welcome students who are on time and assist with cafeteria duty. She also writes late passes for students who arrive late. After that she goes to the ISS room to oversee the students who have gotten in trouble. She requires the students to do their work while also providing a pep talk to boost their spirits.

She sees the potential that students have and makes her room a judgment free place so students are able to talk about what’s wrong and grow from it. She knows her role is not just a job; it’s a personal journey of inspiration.

Her past experiences as an assistant PE teacher in Currituck County Schools provided experience in always being ready to help. Throughout her day she is able to find time to maintain her busy schedule and keep her file system current. She has to make sure students’ and teachers’ attendance records are correct. Our ISS coordinator is not just an administrator but an inspiration to many students throughout the school!
