GCHS girls extend win streak to five

GATESVILLE – Gates County High School’s girls basketball team is off to a 5-0 start.
This past Friday (Dec. 13), the Lady Red Barons used a 16-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter, pulling away from a narrow 31-29 halftime lead en route to a 58-50 win at Bear Grass Charter School.
GCHS opened its season with three consecutive games on the road.
At Manteo on Dec. 5, the Lady Red Barons outscored Manteo 31-7 combined in the second and third quarters and went on to collect a 51-12 victory. London Barber (15 points) and Kyndall Banks (10) led the way.
Semiyah Saunders hauled down eight rebounds to highlight the GCHS effort on the boards. Zebriya Woodley and Banks added six rebounds each.
One night later (Dec. 6), GCHS traveled to Edenton to face J.H. Holmes High School and came home with a 48-36 win. The Lady Red Barons led 30-28 at the end of the third quarter and were able to seal the win by outscoring the Aces 18-8 in the final period of play.
Barber (19 points) and Semayia Cross (10) led GCHS offensively.
The Lady Red Barons hauled down 43 rebounds, led by Woodley (9), Barber (7), Cross (7), and Banks (7). Banks also had seven steals.
On Dec. 9, Gates County traveled to Camden County where they posted a 50-21 win. A trio of GCHS players scored in double figures: Cross (11), Banks (10), and Barber (10).
Zariah Rogers, Zoey Nowell, and Saunders each hauled down six rebounds to lead GCHS on the boards.
In their first home game of the season on Dec. 10, Gates County had nine players to score at least three points in a 47-14 win over Manteo.
Scoring for the Lady Red Barons were: Banks (8), Saunders (7), Cross (6), Claire Jones (6), Rogers (5), Barber (4), Nowell (4), Woodley (4), and Kamryn Riddick (3).
Nowell and Woodley led the rebounding effort with 11 and 10 respectively.
The Lady Red Barons have two games this week: at Martin County on Dec. 19 and home vs. Camden County on Dec. 20.
