GATESVILLE – Gates County High School recently hosted Teals Day, an annual event that honors those currently struggling with cancer or who are remembered for what they meant to the school and the local community.
This year’s event, which is in its 11th year, honored the memory of Catherine Lilley McLean, a member of the Class of 2004 at Gates County High School.
Catherine, the daughter of Doug and Martha Lilley of Gatesville, played tennis for the Lady Barons and was an outstanding performer in GCHS Theatre productions.
She went on to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It was there where she met Dustin Weaver McLean. They married in 2012 and five years later welcomed a new addition to their family with the birth of their son, Corbin William McLean.
Catherine fiercely battled cancer, eventually losing that fight on June 4, 2019. However, her memory remains strong among family and friends.
Teals Day – 2024 was highlighted by wins by the Barons and Lady Barons on the baseball and softball fields.
Proceeds from the event provide a scholarship for a GCHS senior.
