EURE, NC – Sonja Davis Bazemore, 77, of 56 Little Island Road, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023 in her home where she was cared for by her family.
Mrs. Bazemore was born in Northampton County on August 20, 1946 and was the daughter of the late Robert H. “Major” Davis and Johnnie Mae Stancil Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa Shivers; and by a brother, Timmy Davis.
After graduating high school and while living in El Paso, TX where her husband was stationed in the Army, she attended El Paso Dental College and graduated with a degree as a Dental Technician. She used her training to work in dentistry in El Paso and years later, after moving back to her husband’s home in Gates County, worked with Dr. Harold Turner in his practice at Eason’s Crossroads.
Between her “paying jobs”, she was a homemaker, a wife, a mother, and the glue that held the family together as her husband served his country. She kept busy as a volunteer, giving of her time to the American Red Cross, the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and through the NCO Wives Clubs, both at Fort Bliss in El Paso, and at the Army Base in Buedingen, Germany. For her work with Wives Clubs, she was awarded a certificate from the Department of the Army recognizing her countless hours of volunteerism.
Locally, she was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and the Eure Woman’s Club.
Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Daniel S. “Dan” Bazemore; their children, Lorrie B. Henry (husband, Michael) and Donald Wayne Bazemore, Sr. (wife, Susan), all of Eure; three grandchildren, Danielle H. Karol (husband, John), D.J. Bazemore (wife, Lexy), and Christa Bazemore, and her first great-grandchild due to be born in June. Also surviving are two sisters, Linda Kelly of Kinston and Jean Brinkley of Cofield; and a brother, Bobby Davis (wife, Cheryl) of Murfreesboro.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 3, at 3:00 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Eric Bass. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service or all other times at the residence.
