RALEIGH – The work of a local teen is on display here at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA).
Caroline Morgan, the daughter of Ed Morgan of Sunbury, was among the young artists from across the state chosen to have their work displayed at NCMA’s Teens, Inspired: Multifaceted Show.
Morgan’s entry is titled “La Mère de la Lune.”
She found out about the NCMA’s show during her recently completed senior at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. In January of this year, Morgan was among the students enrolled in art classes at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy to go on a field trip to the museum in Raleigh.
In order to be selected for the teen display, students had to create artwork that represents how they show up as multifaceted in the world. The art also had to draw inspiration from three pieces on display at the NCMA. For Morgan, it was Mickalene Thomas’ “Three Graces: Les Trois Femmes Noires” that primarily inspired her work.
“Mickalene Thomas utilizes rhinestones and other common arts and crafts items into a fine art manner,” said Morgan, who used fabric, nail adhesive, nail polish, tinsel, sequins, glitter, acrylic paint, spray paint, sponge, glitter, eyelashes, prismacolor marker, nail glue, jewels and rhinestones to create her piece.
Morgan credited her at teacher at Nansemond-Suffolk with helping her to create her entry.
“Mrs. Mason has helped me to really focus on making the kind of art that I enjoy, while studying and broadening my knowledge of other artists and techniques,” said Morgan.
“AP Art is the most unique course I have taken. There is so much freedom, but an unspoken expectation for yourself that immense amounts of time should be set aside for your art outside of class.”
“As an art student, Caroline shines as brightly as her embellished artworks,” said Mrs. Mason. “She radiates positive energy, is a joy to teach and I can not think of a more deserving student-artist to be selected to exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art.”
NCMA’s “Teens, Inspired: Multifaceted” Show is on display through October.
Morgan’s artwork has been previously displayed at the 2022 Suffolk Plein Air Festival Student competition (first place), as well as Suffolk Arts League 2022 Annual Juried Exhibition.
While in high school, she served as Vice-President of her class, was a Captain of the tennis and lacrosse teams, and graduated with Academic Honors.
Morgan will attend N.C State University.
