GATES, NC – Bennie Gray Castelow, 69, of 840 Willeyton Road, Gates, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 in his home where he was being cared for by family.
Mr. Castelow was born in Hertford County on July 9, 1954, and was the son of Eunice White Castelow of Cofield and the late Ernest Albert Castelow, Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Harrell; a brother, Danny Ray Castelow; and by a granddaughter, Somer Johnson.
A retired Control Room Operator from BASF Chemical following 31 years of employment, he later worked at the Roduco Convenience Site for trash and waste disposal. A member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved gardening, fishing, hunting and running dogs, having also enjoyed membership in the Gates Hunt Club where he had served as past president.
Surviving along with his mother is his wife of nearly 39 years, Peggy Ebron Castelow; two daughters, Christina Laxton (Jesse) of Clarksville, TN and Marie Castelow Steinebach (John) of Suffolk, VA; two sons, Jimmy Laxton of Clarksville and Daniel Castelow (Hilary) of Gates; a sister, Ellen Jones (Keith) of Cofield; a brother, Ernest Castelow, Jr. (Evie), also of Cofield; a brother-in-law, Lin Harrell of Aulander; 10 grandchildren, Kristin Olivey (Wes), Dustin Laxton (Holly), Ryan Shepard, Jessica Hallmark (Chris), Dylan Johnson (Alyssa), Alysa Johnson (Jared), Daisy Laxton, Brandon Wright (Sheridan), William Castelow, and Steven Pierce; nine great-grandchildren, Landon and Jaxon Olivey, Haven and Wade Hallmark, Jeb Rissmiller, Blake, Emma and Waylon Wright, and Josiah Shepard; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A gathering and time of visitation will be held Friday, August 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 5, from 2 to 4:00 p.m. in Holly Springs Baptist Church, 703 River Road, Winton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with medical and other related expenses.
