WINDSOR – Jacob Harrell took a bath here Friday afternoon with his clothes still on.
Several members of the Gates County High School baseball team emptied the water cooler on Harrell’s head just moments after blanking Bertie, 14-0, in a Four Rivers Conference game.
The victory marked Harrell’s 100th career win as a coach.
Gates County banged out 14 hits in the game, which was shortened to five innings due to mercy rule. Owen Black went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead that effort. He also scored three runs and drove home five.
Zach Stewart, Riley Hollowell, Thomas Pierce, and Blayden Miller added two hits each.
Owen Stallings and Pierce combined to pitch a two-hit shutout, fanning six Bertie batters.
Now with seven consecutive wins, Gates County improved to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
The Red Barons will have a home-and-home series against Washington County this week: home on April 4 and on the road April 6. They will participate in an Easter tournament, beginning with an April 8 game vs. Pasquotank County in Elizabeth City.
